Manston Lane Link Road

A major piece of infrastructure to enable one of the largest regeneration projects in Northern England.

The Manston Lane Link Road project is a key part of Leeds City Council’s overall East Leeds and Thorpe Park Vision. Contracted to construct a new link road between the M1 Junction 46 and Manston Lane, this £12m road will provide access to Thorpe Park Shopping Centre and other commercial and residential plots and will form part of the £100m Leeds Orbital Route when it is constructed. In addition to improved access routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians – including a new green bridge link.

Key Challenges.

The project was constructed over the top of existing coal mine workings. Before the new road could be built, extensive drilling and grouting was required to ensure the stability of the underlying ground/mine works. In partnership with WSP, we designed the grouting works and obtained approval from Leeds City Council, as well as engaging a local contractor with extensive knowledge of the area, to successfully complete the project.

Sections of the new link road were over 9 metres above existing ground level.

However, site constraints, including the proximity of new residential and commercial development plots, meant that traditional earth embankment constriction was not possible. To resolve this problem, all new embankments over 3 metres high were designed and constructed using reinforced earth. This involved incorporating geogrid at 500mm intervals vertically to strengthen the embankment slope, achieving a finished slope of 1:1.5 with a largely cohesive material.

Our Solution.

A ‘green bridge’ providing equestrian, cyclist and pedestrian access over the new link road, was an impactful part in the project. In partnership with WSP and ABM Precast Solutions, we designed a precast concrete portal structure to span the new link road. The twin 16.2m spans stand over 9 metres high and 15m wide with each of the roof units weighing 60 tonnes.
