I & H Brown to Build First of its Kind Tyre Recycling Plant in Sunderland

Our Civil Engineering Division have commenced construction of the first phase of a new tyre recycling plant at the Port of Sunderland for new client, Wastefront. This ground breaking project, also known as Project Arrow, is the first of its kind in the UK. In time, the facility will recycle 10 million end of life tyres a year, into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

I&H Brown’s scope of work is split into two elements of work. The first piece of work involves remediation of the site to ensure there are no contaminants present, primarily asbestos, the removal of some historic underground structures, and some limited drainage works. The second element of this contract includes the design of the Phase 2 build contract, for the construction of the remaining infrastructure, foundations and structures required for the recycling plant. This includes the planning of two portal frame structures and numerous external slabs to house the process equipment.

The Sunderland project is the first end of life tyre recycling facility to be built by Wastefront; they have ambitious plans to build a series of these plants. End-of-life tyres are a major source of global CO2 emissions and the problem is only getting worse. The Wastefront Tyre Recycling Plant tackles this head-on by offering a sustainable solution that through chemical recycling provides SAF, for which there is an increasing demand. The Solution is a perfect example of a circular economy, and we are proud to be involved in making the project a success.

The innovative nature of the project has attracted increased press, with the start of the project featuring on TV in both BBC News and Sky TV!
