After the successful delivery of the Whitehills Infrastructure Project, I&H Brown have strengthened our relationship with Shawfair LLP and won the contract to deliver an enabling works package at the Shawfair Community Campus.
The site which will ultimately house a primary school, secondary school and nursery, is located on the former Monktonhall Colliery site, adjacent to the Shawfair Train Station.
The scope includes circa 100,000m3 of earthworks required to form the construction platform. Due to the historic mining activity on the site, there are underground structures to be broken up and processed for reuse. There is combustible material on site which will need to be carefully managed, and will be retained on site and capped, at depth. We have seven historic mineshafts to cap. Finally, we will be constructing two access bellmouths, and points of connection for drainage and utilities.
The key challenge with this project will be delivering the school campus area within 14 weeks to allow access for Mid Lothian Council to commence construction works.
The works started on 11th of May 2026 with a programme of 20 weeks.
