SUB-AGENT

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Sub-Agent to support the management of subcontractors across our civil engineering projects. In this role, you’ll act as the key point of contact for subcontractors, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and in line with contractual, health and safety, and quality requirements. This is a hands-on, site-facing role offering excellent exposure to the operational side of civil engineering projects and the opportunity to bring your technical expertise and leadership experience to a growing contractor.

key responsibilities

  • Follow the Company’s Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) systems and carry out duties in line with the SHEQ Management Manual and related documentation.
  • Represent the company professionally, promoting a proactive and collaborative approach to working relationships.
  • Review and understand tender and contract documentation.
  • Organise and manage the contract site on a day-to-day basis.
  • Create project programmes and monitor work progress against programmes and contract requirements.
  • Hire labour and plant, place subcontracts, and purchase materials as required.
  • Supervise and manage staff, labour, subcontractors, and other resources effectively.
  • Ensure the security of the company’s offices, plant, and equipment.
  • Prepare cost plans, control site costs efficiently, and regularly assess against the contract cost plan.
  • Identify potential claims or contentious matters and liaise with line managers to secure contractual entitlements.
  • Prepare and submit valuations, ensuring all contract variations are identified and submitted; provide additional commercial input as required.
  • Submit internal reports to contract commercial meetings in line with Company procedures.
  • Monitor plant and labour productivity and take early action if outputs are below requirements.
  • Monitor materials delivered and raise any quality or delivery issues with suppliers.
  • Highlight any issues affecting progress or commercial performance to your line manager promptly.
  • Maintain a full daily record of resources and site events.
  • Prepare, attend, and report on site management and progress meetings.
  • Supply all information required by the Client under the contract.
  • Maintain all necessary site files and records, ensuring regular electronic storage and backup to the head office.
  • Ensure timely submission and return of administrative documentation to the head office.
  • Implement the company’s design management procedure where the contract includes a design responsibility.
  • Liaise regularly with the Contracts Manager.
  • Assist with pricing tenders and preparing pre-qualifications.
  • Support staffing and resourcing for successful tenders.
  • Take responsibility for personal development, seeking training or guidance when undertaking unfamiliar tasks.
  • Assist with the development and mentoring of colleagues under your supervision.
  • Attend company-arranged training courses.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role and level of competence.

Skill, knowledge, and experiences

  • Degree or HND in Civil Engineering with a solid understanding of construction processes and infrastructure projects.
  • Experience progressing from setting out/section engineer roles within larger contractors.
  • Strong technical knowledge of civil engineering methods, surveying, and site operations.
  • Good understanding of health, safety, and quality standards on construction sites.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract documentation.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills to coordinate effectively with subcontractors and site teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in monitoring progress and maintaining records.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Professional, reliable, and able to manage multiple priorities on site.
