HiAB OPERATOR (HGV)

We are looking for a HiAB operator to safely and efficiently operate HGVs fitted with HiAB crane equipment and low-loaders to transport, load, and unload heavy civil engineering plant and machinery. The role ensures plant is delivered, collected, and positioned safely and in full compliance with legal, health & safety, quality, and environmental requirements.

key responsibilities

• Drive and operate HGVs in accordance with all legal, company, and industry standards
• Operate HiAB crane equipment for the safe loading, unloading, and positioning of plant and materials
• Operate low-loader vehicles for the transportation of heavy plant to designated locations
• Provide holiday and operational cover for HiAB or low-loader duties as required
• Carry out pre-use, pre-trip, and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle and equipment safety and compliance
• Load, secure, and unload plant and machinery correctly to prevent damage and ensure safe transit
• Ensure vehicles under your control are kept clean, roadworthy, and presentable
• Identify, report, and record vehicle defects immediately, particularly those that may impact safety
• Ensure no unauthorised persons are permitted in or on company vehicles; report any unlawful entry, damage, or security concerns
• Maintain accurate logs, delivery records, inspection sheets, and required documentation
• Adhere to all traffic legislation, driver hours regulations, and company driving policies
• Communicate effectively with the Plant Manager and wider team regarding delivery schedules, delays, or operational issues
• Ensure all accidents, incidents, and near misses are reported promptly in line with company procedures
• Comply with all Company Health & Safety at Work documentation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work
• Follow the Company’s Quality and Environmental Management Systems and relevant procedures
• Wear and maintain all issued personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
• Carry out any other duties reasonably ascribed to the role or directed by your supervisor.

Skill, knowledge, and experiences

Essential:
• Valid HGV licence (Class 1)
• Valid Driver CPC qualification
• Experience operating HGVs within a construction or civil engineering environment
• Good knowledge of load security, lifting operations, and transport regulations
• Strong understanding of health & safety requirements
Desirable:
• Experience operating low-loaders and transporting heavy plant
• HiAB / lorry-mounted crane operator certification (Training could be given)
• ALLMI or equivalent HiAB certification
• Construction plant transport experience
• Good working knowledge of construction sites and site safety rules
