I & H Brown Commence Major Improvement Works at Mossend International Rail Freight Park

We are proud to announce that we have secured a contract with Laing O’Rourke to deliver key groundworks for the new University Monklands Hospital at Wester Moffat, Airdrie.

Our work will include site clearance, extensive earthworks with full testing and reporting, construction of haul routes, contractor compounds, piling mats, and the creation of permanent SUDS ponds and swales. We will also install and maintain a temporary water management system to support the development.

A major part of the project involves reshaping the site, with ground levels being lowered by up to 20 metres in the southeast and raised by up to 12 metres in the northwest, creating a 77-acre platform for the hospital and its campus. This will involve moving over one million cubic metres of material.

The site presents significant challenges, including the management of surface water and the relocation of a 275kv power line, currently being moved by SP Energy Networks. Effective communication and close coordination with Laing O’Rourke and other contractors will be crucial to the project’s success.

The University Monklands Hospital project is targeting net zero carbon standards, aiming to be Scotland’s first public sector building of its kind. We are proud to support this ambition by using HVO fuel across our plant where possible to reduce carbon emissions.

Work began on the 22nd April 2025 and is expected to last for 53 weeks. The new hospital is due to open in 2031 and is a nationally important project. We are thrilled to be playing a major role in delivering this landmark development.
